Gitginsaa Childcare Centre

OUR MISSION

Nurturing the whole child through the interweaving of Nisga’a language and culture with curriculum based early learning.

PHILOSOPHY

We understand that:

  • The child is connected to their family, community, culture, and environment therefore learning about their culture and the culture of others will enable them to get a sense of belonging and also respect for others.
  • Families are children’s first teachers; they deserve to continue being a part of their children’s learning experience even outside the home.

We believe that:

  • Every child is unique, capable and deserves to be celebrated and supported.
  • Every child should be afforded the opportunity to be a part of a quality learning environment and to feel like a valued member of the community.
  • Children should be in a flexible and open environment that produces learning and reflects a sense of identity and belonging.
  • Families deserve assurance of safe, quality childcare for their children in an environment which values and honors training, experience, culture, passion, and commitment to early learning.

PROGRAM

Gitginsaa childcare centre is currently offering a full-day program for children ages birth to school age.

The children will have the opportunities to explore a wide variety of activities and play materials, which promote their physical, cognitive, social-emotional, creative and communication development in a safe environment that celebrates their individuality and dirvese abilities. The Nisga’a language and culture will be interweaved into the daily activities and routine to ensure the whole child is nurtured. Children’s learning will be documented to create a holistic picture of children’s experiences and to measure learning and development.

Our centre uses emergent curriculum to aid in children’s learning and development. Emergent curriculum is a philosophy of teaching and way of planning that focuses on being responsive to children's interests to create meaningful learning experiences. This philosophy prioritizes active participation, relationship building, flexible and adaptable methods, inquiry, and play-based learning. Curriculum is child-initiated, collaborative and responsive to the children's needs. Proponents of this style of teaching advocate that knowledge of the children is the key to success in your program (Cassidy, Mims, Rucker, & Boone, 2003; Crowther, 2005).
